Sheffield Hallam M1 4-0 Doncaster

The outdoor programme resumed for the men’s first team last Saturday with a thumping defeat of Doncaster. The win avenged their South Yorkshire counterparts after a slim 1-0 victory for Doncaster back in October. The win moves Sheffield level on points with both Doncaster and Preston with the opportunity of securing a top four finish by the end of the season. That would represent a fantastic effort from a squad in transition.

With just six minutes on the clock, Sheffield’s early dominance in midfield, coupled with their aggressive play, led to Doncaster turning over the ball.; Sheffield took full advantage, counter attacking at pace with Ethan Chapman finishing off the move with a low reverse stick shot in to the visitor’s goal.

Sheffield continued to press winning a few penalty corners but being unable to convert in to goals. Meanwhile at the other end, the defence were working hard to deny Doncaster any sniff of a shot at the Sheffield goal.

The teams turned around with Sheffield still holding the slenderest of margins. Liam Brown returned to the field of play after seeking medical attention for a cut to the head. Sheffield were in control of the game but had to wait until the forty fourth minute to extend their lead. From a Sheffield penalty corner, Andrew Jackson trapped a visiting defender LBW on the line and umpire Dan Barstow, had no alternative but to award a penalty flick. Adam Price coolly stepped forward and slotted the ball past Ashley Watson in the Doncaster goal. At the other end, Sheffield goalkeeper, Simon Hujwan was still waiting for his first touch of the game.

Twelve minutes later the advantage was three as Sheffield conjured up a “quite delightful” move down the right hand side. James Legg, playing in an unfamiliar but highly effective forward role, robbed the Doncaster defence before the boys in red exchanged precise passes, setting up Martin Sutherland, who with still plenty to do, rounded the keeper and slotted home with an upright reverse stick shot. Simon Hujwan, in the Sheffield goal, had reached for this month’s copy of “Take-a-break” and was completing a word search.

The rout was rounded off by veteran skipper, David Smith. Again, some sublime team play which Doncaster simply couldn’t cope with had the home crowd cooing. Sutherland drew Watson with a first time deflected pass which found Smith in space who simple rolled the ball in to an empty net. Hujwan celebrated, not only the goal, but completing a Sudoku puzzle, albeit the easy level.

So a well-disciplined performance. Only one green card, four goals, three points and no touches for Hujwan. Job done. Up next, another Yorkshire derby, this time away to Wakefield who shared the spoils last time in a 0-0 draw.
