The junior section of Sheffield Hockey Club is highly successful. We employ an open door policy to our Sunday training, welcoming all boys and girls from around 5 to 16 years. With more than 200 regular players, Sheffield has16 teams playing in the Yorkshire Youth Leagues.
Our thriving Junior section consists of players of all standards, who come together at Sheffield Hockey Club to enjoy their hockey and make new friends. As our potential next 1st team players of the future, our juniors play a pivotal role in the on-going development and success of the club. Our Junior teams, both boys and girls, include Under 9's to U16s who play in the Yorkshire Youth Hockey Leagues (YYHL) each month, and U14s to U18s who take part in England Hockey Board (EHB) tournaments - both indoor and outdoor.
Sheffield Hockey Club gained 'ClubsFirst' Accreditation back in 2005 and in 2010 this was renewed, re-affirming our commitment to providing a safe and effective child-friendly environment in which to play hockey. We are currently preparing our next application for renewal.
Our enthusiastic coaching team is led by one of a handful of EHB centrally contracted coaches, who has the experience of leading England Youth teams and managing his own girls as they progress through the club. Qualified and CRB checked Coaches and team managers are in place not only to develop hockey skills, but to act as mentors, identify areas for development in players and should be regarded as your first point of contact should you or your child have any queries or concerns.
All coaching sessions are held at Abbeydale Sports Club, whilst the YYHL fixtures usually consist of a number of short duration matches at other locations throughout Yorkshire. You are warmly welcomed to come along and support your child when selected, and who knows, you may get bitten by the 'hockey bug' and perhaps join our band of volunteers by qualifying as a coach or umpire.
Sheffield Hockey Club first introduced the role of Hockey Development Officer back in 2005, marking our commitment to the development of Hockey within South Yorkshire.
What does the role involve?
The Hockey Development Officer is responsible for working on the development objectives for Sheffield Hockey Club's Junior section, increasing hockey participation and ensuring that all players have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
The role of the Development Officer is to create partnerships with charities, schools, South Yorkshire Sport and other sports clubs to achieve short and long term objectives identified in Sheffield Hockey Club's five year development plan including:
- Creation of a strategic junior development plan to make Sheffield HC a centre of excellence for hockey in South Yorkshire.
- Promote Sheffield Hockey Club and hockey in general in local schools.
- Facilitate hockey competitions
Sheffield Hockey Club welcomes any ideas, suggestions or opportunities that you may wish to discuss. Your support is invaluable to us and we are always keen to hear from proactive parents, wannabe coaches, school staff and students who are interested in supporting the development and delivery of Hockey across Sheffield.
