Wakefield 2-3 SHC M1

Last Saturday the men’s first team travelled to Wakefield for a second successive Yorkshire derby; and, for the second successive week collected all three points. A scrappy affair maybe, but a crucial win in so many ways. For the first time this season the team were able to put together back to back victories. Just like the previous game against Doncaster, the team were able to put right their shortcomings from the season’s previous encounter. A loss in October against Doncaster was turned into a 4-0 win whilst a goalless draw against Wakefield at Abbeydale back in September was avenged with a hard fought away victory.

Sheffield just shaded the first half. They were probably good for a few more goals but decent attacks and decent shooting chances went astray. Ten minutes before the break, Luca Lixi drove powerfully out of midfield before slipping the ball to David Smith at the top of the circle. Wakefield keeper, James Jones, threw himself at Smith who managed to nudge the ball to Lixi just before the keeper was able to make the save. Although Lixi couldn’t get the contact he would have hoped for, he got enough and was able to force the ball over the line for the opening goal. Wakefield were livid, claiming a push in the build up to the goal, but despite a conference between the umpires, the goal stood.

The second half followed much the same pattern, Sheffield were slightly stronger but couldn’t turn possession into goals. They were made to pay for their insipid shooting as Wakefield won a penalty corner which Sam Shute converted to make it one each with fifty-five minutes of the match gone. However, whereas this could’ve been the cue for Sheffield to slowly wilt away and allow the home side to turn the screw, instead, Sheffield went on the attack. Four minutes after Wakefield’s equaliser, a swift break down the left and a thunderous cross was met by James Gunthorp at the near post. His deflected shot flew high into the home net to restore Sheffield’s lead.

With four minutes left on the clock, Sheffield extended their lead with a neat finish by Liam Brown. Will Blyth won the ball in midfield and then powered his way towards the home goal. He found Martin Sutherland just outside the top of the circle who in turn found Brown out wide on the left. Brown drove towards the circle, drew the keeper then finished from an almost impossible acute angle.

Wakefield weren’t finished and gave themselves a chance to share the spoils when former Sheffield frontman, Danny Berry, scored with just a couple of minutes left to play. Sheffield held out and were relieved to hear the final whistle and bag all three points. Next up, Durham University at home.
