Sheffield Hockey Club

As the season draws to a close there are usually "crucial" games everywhere; these are to either avoid relegation or keep the chase for promotion and/or titles going!

After last weeks exciting but ultimately unsuccessful attempt by the Mens 1s to try and take the Club higher than it has ever been, it is now time for the Mens 3s to take the Yorkshire League and the Club into previously uncharted territory!

So whats at stake?  The Yorkshire Premier League Title.  

Doesn't sound like much but no 3rd team has ever won it before.  Our Mens 2s have won it when they gained promotion to the North Hockey League.  But neither us nor any other 3rd team has been ranked this high.

The only team that can catch the Mens 3s are Leeds 2 and the league table looks like this:

Of the two sides Sheffield have the harder run in with fixtures against Boston Spa, Brigg and Halifax while Leeds have to play our cross city rivals Bankers, City of York and Boston Spa.

The equation is simple take 3 points at the weekend and the title is ours.  But, this whole campaign will all have been for pleasure as despite winning the title the Mens 3s cannot currently get promoted.  This is due to the fact that 3rd XIs are not allowed to play in the North regional leagues.

We aren't the only ones trapped by this glass ceiling, Durham University 3s are in the same position.  They have already won their title with a game left to play!  They are also unbeaten, 8 pts clear and have goal difference of +93.  So a perfect 66 point season is possible.

Anyway back to us!  We don't expect you to come trooping up the A1 to watch us but if you are at a loose end then the support is always welcome!
