U14 Girls Match Report 2/10/11

Sheffield U14 girls took two teams over to Bowdon in Cheshire to play friendlies against the hosts and Belper. With two exceptions the A team was made up Y9’s, the B team comprised entirely of Y8’s.

An excellent effort by everyone to make the 9.30am start time, and especially by the Pearce’s, who incurred a hefty taxi bill due to a ‘keyless car disaster’ in a Glossop petrol station.

We used 26 players but still had to leave another 13 at home! We all hope Rebecca Newton recovers from her recent concussion (silly pastime, horse-riding!) and will be able to play the next matches.

Sheffield A lost 5-0 to a very strong Bowdon A, but we took the opportunity to play a few players in unfamiliar positions, and it gave the girls an insight as to where they need to develop.

The second match against Belper A was a closer affair and created some good scoring chances early on. The girls eventually succumbed 5-2 with both goals coming from Megan Crehan.

Sheffield B did a demolition job on both Bowdon & Belper B teams. Goals from Rebecca Fowler, Ruby Knight and Tash Jones were enough to beat Bowdon 3-1. There were solid performances in defence from Tash Perryer and Lucy Da Costa, and Daina Ali did well in her first outing for the club. Against Belper the girls ran riot scoring nine unanswered goals. Maddie Pearce capped a fine day with a hat-trick, Ruby Knight scored two, India Allatt, Megan Newell-Price, Rebecca Fowler chipped in with one apiece, and Sophie Brotherston put the seal on it with the final goal. Sophie ended the game well, being hit on the nose with 4 minutes left, coming back on with 2 minutes left, and then being hit on the forehead on the final whistle. They breed ‘em tough at Abbeydale.
