Sheffield Smurf Turf Tournament

Saturday24, Sunday25 and Monday 26^th August 2013.

To celebrate the arrival of the iconic London 2012 Olympic hockey pitch at  Abbeydale Park, Sheffield, we are inviting competitive mixed hockey teams to enter the inaugural Sheffield Smurf Turf Tournament. 

Ethos:

The weekend is designed to be an enjoyable gathering of competitive mixed hockey players, encouraged to play in the spirit of the tournament. 

Format:

The ten team tournament will see two pools of five teams play group games over Saturday and Sunday. The top two teams in each group will play in cross over semi finals on the Monday morning for a place in Monday afternoon’s final. Teams finishing 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th in their group will playoff against the team finishing in the corresponding position on the Monday to complete the tournament rankings. This will guarantee each team will get at least five matches over the Bank Holiday weekend on the famous blue turf. Matches will consist of two 20 minute periods.

The tournament is open to competitive mixed hockey teams. There are places for up to ten teams on a first come first served basis. Once your entry has been received, you will be notified whether or not you have successfully reserved a place. An entry will be secured upon receipt of the entry fee of £250.  

Accommodation:

SSTT are very proud to announce The Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel as the official accommodation provider to the 2013 tournament. Special room rates have been negotiated. Room only accommodation for two is available at just £40 per night. (There are 12 triple rooms available at £50 per night). It is anticipated that demand will be high and although a significant number of rooms have been reserved for tournament participants, it is advisable that you book early. (Once your entry has been confirmed, you will receive a code which will allow you to book rooms at these special rates.)

Squads:

There will be no maximum squad size. Please bring along as many club members as you wish to.

Umpires:

If clubs have umpires who wish to attend and officiate their own team's matches, they would be most welcome. For all other matches umpires will be appointed.

Entertainment:

Sheffield is a vibrant city with many fantastic pubs, bars and clubs. Upon arrival teams will be issued with a tournament entertainment guide. A must for any visitor to Sheffield is to sample some of the local real ales readily available at a number of friendly pubs which are full of character.

Food and drink:

A range of bar food is available from the Abbeydale bar. In addition there will be BBQ food available throughout the tournament. The bar at Abbeydale will be open throughout the tournament where local real ales will be available. Food is also available from the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel.

Charity:

The SSTT intends to donate a significant amount of the proceeds from the weekend to our chosen charity. This year is is Tommy's childrens charity.
