Wakefield M2 3-3 SHC M2

This week saw the 2nd team travel to Wakefield in search of their first win of the season. With fresh faces there was a positive attitude going into the game. Adam Fletcher was rather hoping for a win on his 82nd birthday and we all strived to do our best. The same comments were rung out in the team talk about playing well and not grinding out results, and trying to keep the positivity high.

After a strong start and spotting the weakness in the Wakefield defence, Sheffield were unable to capitalise on a couple of early opportunities. It then looked like it was going to be the same old day after Wakefield got their first breakaway winning a corner, which to be fair was well worked before being put into the net. 1-0 Wakefield. Sheffield then bounced back positively and turned the pressure straight back onto the opposition, when some slick passing hockey led to the ball being crashed into the D and Ashfat Abdulwahid neatly deflecting the ball into the roof of the net. 1-1.

Phil Butler then received a 2 minute green and Sheffield were suddenly on the back foot. This led to another corner to Wakefield, which a slow flick was cleverly slotted into the goal.

The second half started very much as the first with Sheffield piling on the pressure with some constructive play and more composure on the ball than they showed in the first half. Winning a short corner saw birthday boy Adam Fletcher drag flick the ball into the top corner to equalise the score. 2-2. A number of short corners from Sheffield was looking promising to take the lead for the first time, but again, Sheffield lacked their clinical finishing. Even when Wakefield were reduced to 3 defenders, Sheffield still could not find the net.

Wakefield then began some pressure of their own and Sheffield just seemed to all switch off. An excellent decision from the umpire led to chat from a certain Wakefield forward who received a yellow card. However, even against 10 men, Sheffield seemed to be sleeping. So much so, that when an open goal appeared in front of Chris Debney he was unable to put the ball in because he was too busy concentrating on getting all the students heads back on the task in hand. This could have sealed things for Sheffields first win, but as it happens, Wakefield then went on to win another short corner. Josh Parkinson saved the original shot along the floor and none of the defenders reacted to this so one of the Wakefield forwards simply lifted the ball over Josh to take the lead. 3-2 Wakefield.

Still shell shocked Sheffield went hell for leather before a short corner with 2 minutes to go was neatly worked for Ashfat Abdulwahid to get his second of the game and the equaliser. 3-3. Wakefield again broke away to win a short corner in the dying seconds and the final whistle then blew. Chris Debney, keen to make up for his miss, then stood up when no one else would and ran out on the defending short. His pressure on the shot meant it was a tame effort which Josh Parkinson easily kept out. The Final Score, 3-3 and Sheffield got their 2nd point of the year, but that first win still eludes them. On to Fortress Dale to keep the unbeaten run going.
