SHC on the Gold Coast

Commonwealth Games Gold Coast 2018

There can’t be too many clubs outside of the Premier League who can boast almost an entire team of ex-players at the Commonwealth Games. Sheffield Hallam has nine players out in Australia, including England captain Phil Roper.

If we could have them all back, our Commonwealth Games select XI would line up something like this:

A formidable strike force in the form of England’s Liam Ansell, leading goal scorer in the National League whilst with SHC during the 2014-15 season with 29 goals, Scotland’s Gavin Byers who played for us in our Premier League season 2013-14 and Welshman Rhys Gowman who left in 2014.

In midfield:

In the powerhouse of a midfield we have Nick Parkes who joined in September 2014 following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and played for one season, England’s David Goodfield who left for Germany in 2015 and England captain and drag flick expert Phil Roper, who helped the club win the North Conference and playoffs in 2013 before moving to Wimbledon.

In Defence:

Our stoppers would be Scotland’s Willie Marshall, who carried out HDO duties during 2013-14, Wales halfback Gareth Furlong, who was part of our North Conference winning side and Premier League squad with England’s Brendan Creed, who along with Goodfield left SHC for Germany in 2015, sweeping at the back.

With only nine players we will have to call on Mike Shaw, , who played for Wales in Glasgow and ask Scotland’s Jamie Cachia to dust off his Glasgow keepers’ kit to play as they were both part of the North Conference winning side and Premier League squad.

Meanwhile, out in Australia two coaches with past experience with Sheffield:

Firstly, Welsh women's assistant coach, Gareth Weaver-Tyler who galvinsed the SHC men's first team during his tenure between 2006 and 2013. We also have England's head coach Bobby Crutchley who had a stint with the club during the 90s.
