SHC M1 4-2 Deeside Ramblers

It’s been a few weeks coming but finally the Sheffield Hallam men's first team remembered to pack their shooting sticks and notch only their second win of the season. Disappointing performances against the likes of Wakefield, Olton and Doncaster were put behind them at the team swept aside Deeside who were sitting in third place at the start of the day.

The performance was a lot more measured with the team looking win ball and then keep it, rather than rush things and lose it through silly turnover. Each team threatened without ever making the best of their early chances. Finally, the stalemate was broken when skipper, David Smith, was able to steal the ball from the visitors and release Joe Booth down the left hand side. After some clever skills, Booth lashed the ball across the by-line for Man of the Match, Will Blyth, to meet at the near post and guide past Olly Green in the Deeside goal.

Nick Mobbs turned in another impressive performance.

With Sheffield bossing the midfield the teams turned around at half time with the score still at 1-0 to the hosts.

The second half started with Deeside showing more purpose and closing down areas previously left open. Sheffield had to step their game up and responded appropriately.  However, with only four minutes having elapsed since the break, Blyth played what can only be described as a “dream ball” down the right flank for Martin Sutherland to pick up and drive at goal. He shaped to drop it to Smith, fooling the keeper who dropped to cut off the pass. With Green deceived, Sutherland rounded the keeper to slot home from close range to double the home side’s lead.

The team looked for a third with play opening up as Deeside went looking for a way back into the game themselves. Things started to get a little nervy, especially when the visitors managed to convert one of their numerous penalty corners. Despite the threat of penalty corner expert, Ali Ghazanfar, being neutralized by Connor Jameson’s excellent number one running, Desside were able to slip the ball left and find a way past the superb Simon Hujwan in the Sheffield goal.

Simon Hujwan makes another imortant save.

In previous weeks this has been the cue to press self-destruct and concede a second. However, nobody had counted on Joe Booth joining the party. Just seven minutes after conceding, Booth skipped along the top of the circle before pulling the trigger and firing past Green in the Deeside net to record his first ever National League goal. The two goal lead was restored and optimism returned that three points could be secured. The optimism turned to belief as Booth notched his second of the game. With a new found confidence, Booth collected the ball after a saved penalty corner shot and fired in a reverse stick strike to send both players and the crowd in to ecstasy.

Deeside though had time to pull one back with three minutes still on the clock and then to win a cluster of corners from which they threatened to score a third. However, from deep inside the team found a resolve to hold on and win this one by four goals to two. Next up its Lichfield after a well-earned week off.
