Sheffield Hallam M1 2-2 Olton

Full of hope after last week's sterling performance against Bowdon, the team were in high spirits and fully hoped to secure all three points from this encounter. Unfortunately, the spoils were shared as the Men's first team recorded their third draw of the season, this time against Midlands outfit, Olton.

Olton were well organised and were able to capitalise on some sloppy play between the home defence and midfield. A wayward pass was picked off and the ball run in to the circle for an easy pop at goal and suddenly it was 1-0 to the visitors.

Sheffield rallied and started to play some neat hockey of their own but Olton were proving to be as stubborn as they were in both of last year’s encounters. Finally, the visitors slipped up and the umpire awarded a penalty corner. After the ball had been dragged out, skipper David Smith then sent the ball goal ward at pace for Adam Price to neatly deflect the ball in to the net for his first National League goal in over three years.

Sheffield went in search of another goal but all too often their frenetic pace led to too many turn overs rather than settling the game down and taking control of the ball. There are many an enthusiastic youngster in the side, with the willingness to run through brick walls, but experience at this level is lacking. Unfortunately, despite a number of opportunities to halt Olton in their tracks, the visitors found their way through the Sheffield press and had an easy opportunity to make it 2-1.

After a reflective half time chat, the team came out fired up and played with an intensity that Olton struggled to contend with. The team will be disappointed not to have taken advantage during this period of sustained pressure and the Midlanders held on to their slim lead.

However, the home side were finally able to find an equaliser, once again from a well-executed penalty corner routine. With the ball once again heading towards the bottom right of the goal, Nick Mobbs pounced and sent the ball flying into the roof of the net to delight of Sheffield players and supporters alike. Mobbs is a shining example of how the club are able to bring players on through the teams and in to the first team. Only a few seasons ago he was playing 4th team hockey on Yorkshire Division One but against Olton he was able to celebrate his first National League goal.

Sheffield pushed hard and looked for a winner but nearly found themselves behind once more. Indeed they would have been had Phil Butler not been on hand to clear the ball off the line and run it to safety. With the clock heading towards zero Sheffield fluffed their final penalty corner before seeing Olton break away and win one of their own. Simon Hujwan in goal made the vital save and both teams settled for a point a piece. Next up, Doncaster away.
