Preston 2-1 SHC M1

Another long trip to the backwaters of English Hockey, but this time no three points as a reward. Preston had been beaten 3-1 in the opening match of the season. On that occasion they had been under strength with a number of players failing to be registered on time.

This time though, Preston were impressive and put pressure on the Sheffield circle and snuffed out most of the visitors attacks. Sheffield had to cope with Preston's resilience without the services of a fifteenth man after Luca Lixi was ruled out with a nasty injury sustained in Saturday's 2nd team match.

Ethan Chapman thought he had made it 1-0 when the ball dribbled in to the bottom corner of the goal only for umpire Bennett to rule correctly that the shot had been from outside the circle.

However, the visitors had the ball in the back of the Preston net, albeit off a defenders' stick, after Will Blyth fired the ball goal ward from a penalty corner. The goal coming in the closing minutes of the first half meant the teams turned around with Sheffield leading 1-0.

Fourteen minutes in to the second half though, Preston had taken control of the game as they led 2-1. Their first goal came from a penalty corner, awarded after sloppy defensive play. Preston's second came two minutes later with the ball being somehow squeezed between Sheffield goalkeeper Simon Hujwan and the goal post.

After that, Sheffield struggled to breakdown the home defence and when they did, squandered good chances.

So one more chance to collect points before the mid season break - against league leaders Loughborough Students, at home on Sunday 29th, starting at 13:30.
