Bowden 2-2 Sheffield Hallem M1

Very rarely is there much satisfaction to be had from a 2-2 draw, especially if you were 2-0 up with nine minutes to go. However, you can start to understand the euphoria amongst the men's first team after achieving just that against Bowdon on Sunday especially if you've been pumped 7-1 the week before and have the current North Conference champions away as your next challenge.
Whether it's was the undefinable determination to put right the wrongs of the previous week or whether it was the fact the team were buzzing off the vast quantities of coffee consumed at Starbucks before departure, we will never know for sure. However, what is certain is that the way the team took the game to their opponents would have made every member of Sheffield Hockey Club proud. From the off, the team were busting a gut, hassling and frustrating their illustrious hosts. Former Sheffield defender and Welsh international, Mike Shaw, was clearly shaken by the sheer physicality of Ollie Ashdown's play. Will Hearn only occasionally crawled out of the pockets of the Sheffield midfielders who neatly cajoled him around the park, never once letting him have the time and space on the ball he so craves. Another former player, Alex Humphries was better but lacked the support and drive of his team mates.

Meanwhile, there were sterling defensive performance from the likes of David Knapton and Andrew Jackson, the latter who seemed to spend the majority of the games diving full stretch to make last gasp tackles, and succeeding. The work rate of the likes of Will Blyth and David Smith in the Sheffield midfield was tireless whilst Matt Anderson was starting to find space to play in. Liam Brown, making his first appearance in a Sheffield also added a new dimension to Sheffield's play.  At half time the teams turned around all square, but goalless.
The second half got underway at pretty much the same frenetic pace. All of a sudden, with five minute of the second half gone, new boy Ashdown found himself at the top of the circle with a rare shooting chance. He will be the first to admit he didn't connect with it quite as well as he had hoped to. However, the ball flew past the keeper and Sheffield were 1-0 up.

Delight turned to sheer disbelief as Ashdown notched a second. A burst of pace down the right and a delicate touch from debutant Ethan Chapman set up Ashdown who crashed the ball home from an acute angle.
However, Bowdon are a force in the north for a reason and finally found a way past Man of the Match, Simon Hujwan, in the Sheffield goal. Hujwan saved the initial shot but was unable to keep the rebound out. The only real blot on the day was the speed in which the home side were able to pull themselves level. From the restart they won the ball and raced towards the Sheffield goal.

So a two goal lead was let slip away but a valuable (and possibly unexpected) point was earned. More importantly a new belief was born which will surely lead to many three pointers over the remainder of the season.
