GS: Kath Hughes 51-PC
The last few matches have seen Sheffield women's 1's starting to show real potential. Against Neston the team was keen to continue the great progress made thanks to new coach, Malcolm Pratt. Neston are tough competition and Sheffield knew it was going to be a closely matched game.
Both teams started strong, showing determination to collect all three points. In the first half Sheffield had a number of good chances, but with no end results. Georgia Crowther was called upon to make a number of important saves to help keep the score at a 0-0. Neston though they were awarded a short corner as the half time whistle was blown. This too was kept out.
In the second half Neston were strong in their attacking press but Emily Wills was unafraid and showed brilliant skill and strength to keep them from breaking through the Sheffield defensive lines. Sheffield were able to secure a short corner and with the accuracy from Jemima Board she slipped the ball right for Kathryn Hughes to deflect into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
The rest of the second half ticked by with Sheffields holding their resolve not to concede with the players digging deep to the end of the match. Even with two short corners being awarded against Sheffield in the last five minutes of the match couldn't shake the concentration of the home defensive unit as each player worked very hard to keep possession of the ball, securing a victory against one of the stronger teams in the league.
It was a great achievement and as a team Sheffield are continuing to show their progress in what is shaping up to be an exciting season ahead.
Well fought girls!!
