GS: Nat Hinchcliffe 3-F,PC,PC
The Ladies’ 4s finished the year with a great performance against Doncaster.
We began strongly with a short corner being awarded to the home team early on in the match.
Jennifer Harvey injected the ball to Nat who slotted it away in the back of the net.
Doncaster went on the offensive but there was some great defensive play from the superfast and committed Izzy and Jen Smith to thwart their advances.
The backs and goalie (Helen Skelton) were robust in their defence and after a diving save by Helen, Rachel Harvey stopped the follow up on the line with a reflexive save.
Cathryn anticipated the play brilliantly and Sophie remained resolute and calm in keeping the ball away from the opposing players.
A penalty flick was awarded against Doncaster for a defender’s foot on the goal line but unfortunately E was unable to convert the chance into a goal.
At half time the score was 1-0 and confidence grew with the performance given by the team.
There were more goal scoring opportunities from Chris and the Santa hatted Rachel Meade but these weren’t converted until Nat scored a second goal from a further short corner.
Kate, Cathryn and Jennifer rotated across the half back positions.
All gave strong performances and fed the ball into space and used a number of options to open the play.
Maddy as centre mid managed to stifle Doncaster’s best player with the assistance of Jen Smith and again made some great interceptions and passes forwards. Izzy had several fantastic runs down the pitch, encouraged by her very loud & much appreciated family on the side-line who entertained us all with their shouts and Mexican waves!
Nat scored a third goal from an oblique angle in the last few minutes of the match to get her hatrick.
In the dying minutes Jennifer Harvey sprant down almost the whole length of the pitch on the left wing but unfortunately the ball just ran away from her and over the backline before she could pass it to the waiting forwards in the D.
Helen Skelton had a great game in goal with lots of encouragement and help to her defenders to limit the number of forays into the D by the opposition. However, she was always ready to make a save when required. The end score was 3-0 to Sheffield.
Nat was voted girl of the game with her brilliant hatrick and Kate Morgan came a close second after a strong performance.
Lots to encourage the 4s for next year when the season starts again with a match against one of the hardest teams in the league.
