A very windy, early Saturday morning sees Sheffield ladies 4th take on Leopold at Abbeydale. It was good to see some Sheffield supporters braving the weather to cheer us along (and help set up the pitch, the final corner flag being positioned as the game started!) Leopold had first push back but Sheffield had the wind behind them.
The first 10 minutes saw some great attacking play from the Sheffield forwards and midfielders, with Chris seeing a shot go just wide of the goal. More attacking play saw Sheffield get into the opposition’s D but were denied the goal by the Leopold defence. Then it was Leopold’s turn to attack but Sheffield’s defenders were ready and some fast running saw the ball back in their possession. Unfortunately it didn’t last and Leopold eventually penetrated Sheffield’s D earning themselves a short corner. Again the Sheffield defence were up for the challenge and 15 minutes in the score was still 0-0. With some great passing from Maddie, Becky and Ciara Sheffield got the ball into Leopold half but an interception gave Leopold the numbers up front, 5 on 2 and the goal was scored.
Sheffield kept their heads held high and continued on the attack applying pressure to the Leopold defence but soon they were facing an oncoming attack. Goalkeeper Caitlin stayed strong taking on the Leopold attacker and introduced her to the Olympic Astroturf. Caitlin made some excellent saves and the team defended 2 more short corners but eventually the ball made its way into the Sheffield goal, 2-0 at half time.
A positive half time team talk from Sandra and Sheffield knew what they needed to work on in the second half. The wind in their faces did little to slow down Hana as she ran down the right wing but the crosses into the D didn’t quite find Sheffield players. Like the first half the start of the second saw Sheffield in possession, attacking, winning the ball in the midfield and not giving away any free hits but the ball refused to go into the goal despite everyone’s best efforts. This was the difference between the two sides; Leopold had another 2 breaks scoring on both occasions.
4-0 down but Sheffield battled on, frustrating the Leopold attack and denying them another goal; until the last 2 minutes when they scored a 5th in the top left corner. The score line really doesn’t do Sheffield the credit they deserve, everyone gave 100% and never gave up.
Girl of the game was Ciara with Caitlyn coming second. Well deserved girls.
