The Ladies 4s approached this game against Dronfield with determination and verve after the bloody (literally, following a ball to head incident!) defeat of last season.
Despite immense pressures in the D they held Dronfield to one goal for most of the first half.
Some speedy breaks from the halves and forwards unfortunately were unsuccessful, until a beautifully angled goal from Izzy Urbanski equalised just before the end of the half.
Still buoyant at half time the team identified key areas to work on in for the remainder of the match.
Using width and height the Ladies were able to make a few more brakes into the opposition’s half, and were awarded a couple of short corners.
But a strong opposition and the hard battle in the first half took its toll and they were unable to convert these opportunities into goals.
The team worked tirelessly in defence, and despite several superb saves from Sophie T, Dronfield racked up another two goals.
Disaster struck towards the end as Steffi was attacked by cramp and regrettably had to retire early, limping off the pitch having put in a sterling performance.
Not disheartened Sheffield continued to play with defensive intensity.
However, disappointingly, another two goals snuck in. End result: Sheffield ladies 1 – Dronfield 5.
Dronfield's key players were ex-Sheffield Sarah Hartinton-Pollock and Sue Connor who both scored two ably assisted another ex-Sheffield player, Jenny Wass.
A goal difference that does not reflect the effort and standard of play exhibited by all the team.
