GS: L Cottingham 1-F Matt White 1-F
The 8ths faced a Chapeltown team who arrived at Abbeydale having only taken one point all season, that being against the 8ths in the reverse fixture. Hopes were high of a home win and we set off well. Liam Cottingham as always, got stuck in, Phil Lumb was a handful for Chap's defenders, Ian Richards and Barry Jackson were solid at the back, and Andy Robinson grafted hard in midfield. The efforts were rewarded when Cottingham grabbed the opener. Sheffield continued to press and a mixture of poor finishing, good goalkeeping (he was awarded man of the match by his colleagues) and bad luck, prevented more goals from coming. Chapeltown scored against the run of play and worked hard to get in the game. In the second half, Sheffield were poor, misdirecting passes and losing possession on many occasions. They did however score a scrappy goal from a short corner with 9 mins to go. The scorer, Matt White, who had played well out wide. So, all that was needed was to shut up shop for the win. Sadly it was not to be and we gifted Chapeltown two goals late on, to leave us demoralised and defeated. Still after a warmish shower under the trickling shower heads of the changing rooms, the memory of defeat was slightly erased and we enjoyed a healthy tea (including broccoli) with our old friends from Chapeltown, who, as ever were very friendly and sociable. At the end of the day, that's why us old guys play, to meet old friends, try our best on the field, and socialise afterwards. Merry Christmas!
