Sevens on the wrong side of 12-goal thriller
GS: Freddie Ward 2-PS,PS, Tom Woodruff 1-F, Kip Ward 1-F
Not much to report about in this match: Only 12 goals, a penalty flick double for a young player, the opposition goalkeeper sin-binned and no card for Pat Ward: In short, a day of surprises!
We have had great difficulty starting well this season, and this match was no exception. We were four goals down before we started to play, which isn’t ideal if you want to get something out of the game. However, by half-time we had narrowed it to 5-2. First, we were awarded another penalty flick, this time won by Freddie Ward. In our team, you have to be 16 or less to take a penalty flick, so Freddie took it himself and scored. The second goal was created and scored by Freddie’s cousin, Kip, after a good dribble into the D.
The fightback continued in the second half. First, an excellent move involving Kristian Woolhouse, Matt Dewhurst and Zak Lovell ended with Tom Woodruff scoring. Then Kristian won another penalty flick, hotly disputed by the goalkeeper. Kristian obviously felt too old to take the flick, so Freddie Ward scored again. The goalkeeper then continued his vociferous protests, and was duly sent off. This turn of events we couldn’t use to our advantage. In fact, pushing up too far in search of further goals cost us dear at the back, as Rotherham scored three times more.
We entertain Sheffield Bankers next week, and need to tighten up at the back if we are going to get a result!
