GS: Paul Kendall 1-F Tom Oldale 1-PC Jonty Barnicroft 1-PC
Sheffield fifth string were dealt a third straight defeat of the season on Saturday, this time at the hands of Worksop. The visitors were well organised as you would expect any club first team to be. The fifth team, who have enjoyed two successful seasons with two promotions are finding hockey at this level rather tough.
It was the visitors who pressed hard from the off and put pressure on the home side. Some strong running and slick passing undid the Sheffield defence all too easily. Within no time Worksop had carved out a two-nil lead and were looking good for a goal every time they ventured forward.
Indeed, they extended their lead despite Sheffield starting to get themselves a little more organised. However, Sheffield finished the half on a high, scoring the goal of the game just before the whistle went for the break. James Subden found Paul Kendall exchanged passes with veteran midfielder, Rob Ward, before planting the ball high in to the goal.
After the interval, Worksop picked up where they left off by adding a fourth. Tom Oldale reduced the arears with a well hit penalty corner but the home side were now having to carry a number of players with injuries. Worksop scored at will despite the heroics (again) of Matt Drohan in goal. Had it not been for Drohan the score would have undoubtedly been into double figures.
Jonty Barnicott grabbed the final goal of the game but by then it was all too late. With the visiting keeper sprawled on the floor having saved a decent penalty corner strike, Barnicott was on hand to toll the ball over the goal line. Next up, Brigg (who beat Worksop by lots) away. Maybe a bus will need to be parked.
