Sheffield edged out Ben Rhydding in a tight match at Abbeydale. The start was delayed by 25 minutes due to heavy traffic encountered by the visitors. Push back was the cue for the snow to start falling and a flurry soon became a blizzard, making playing conditions tricky. Despite their late arrival, Rhydding started the game well. In their previous encounter Sheffield had found Rhydding a keen and talented but slightly naive young team. But this game showed they were quick learners and had improved massively in the half season since. The visitors deservedly opened the scoring through a reverse stick shot from the top of the D, deflected home from close range.
As has often been the case this season, Sheffield failed to impose themselves on the game in the first half. Joe Nichols had the home team's best chance when he shot over the goal on his reverse. Sheffield's frustration was epitomised by Rob Ward's green card for dissent.
The home team were determined to improve in the second half and increased the effort and precision of their play. Short corners were won and a number of good crosses narrowly evaded Sheffield sticks. This was finally rewarded when Duncan Longson jinked past the runners at a short corner and passed the ball into the goal. Sheffield took the lead for the first time late in the game when they finally connected with a cross. Mark Mobbs grabbing the winner from a fine counter attacking move. Sheffield held on for the remainder of the game to claim the points.
