Sheffield 3s travelled to Leeds 3 missing six players from their squad but still confident of getting a result.
Leeds finished runners up to Sheffield in last season’s Yorkshire premier league and were the only team to beat the champions in an otherwise undefeated campaign.
Sheffield started the game more brightly, forcing three early short corners.
However, they were unable to convert this pressure into a goal.
Instead it was Leeds who took the lead five minutes from half time.
The ball was struck powerfully into the D where a Leeds forward deflected it into the corner of Keiran Bedford’s goal.
The second half was an even affair. Sheffield became more and more desperate for an equaliser which left them vulnerable to quick counterattacks.
Leeds won a series of short corners of their own, which were repelled by Sheffield’s defence and a fine double, point blank save by Bedford to keep Sheffield in the game.
With two minutes left, Sheffield won a short corner which was to prove their last chance of the game.
Unfortunately the routine failed to test the goalkeeper and Leeds were able to play out the remaining seconds of the game to claim a victory.
