Finally a win under our belts for the 2015-16 Sheffield 2XI, despite a below par performance. Coming of the back of a 4-3 loss at Chester away despite giving our best performance of the season, we were optimistic going into the warm up, with the wonderkid Brammer playing some absolute bangers in the changing room.
The first ten minutes of the game encapsulated the rest of the game in terms of intensity and lack of sharpness. Newcastle were a well drilled side, however lacking experience. Sheffield's work rate was brilliant but lacked the 'Barcelona' style hockey shown in the week previously. Despite a lackluster first half for both sides, Dirk Kuyt aka Tom Brammer (for both looks and goal scoring ability) put us ahead to go into half time 1-0.
With a promising half time team talk from the skipper and coach Blyth, we lined up for the second half with some new found motivation. However, Newcastle came out all guns blazing, matching our high intensity. With five yellows cards throughout the game, going down to 9 men on two occasions, the game was naturally scrappy. Newcastle equalised half way through the second half with a short corner. Credit where credit is due to Sheffield, we don't stop until the final whistle, with Chris Debney scoring the winner in the last 5 minutes. Umpires were brilliant.
